The Real Reason You’ve Taken Golf Lessons for Years but Still Don’t Trust Your Swing
Jan 12, 2026By Mary Lengle Founder, SGE | Business Strategist & Former Media Producer
I didn't pick up a golf club until I was 42 years old.
In some ways, that was terrifying. But in other ways, it was a gift. Because I came to the game late, I didn't just see the swing; I saw the struggle.
I spent 25 years as a producer and communications strategist for authors, experts and brands working with top outlets like The TODAY Show, Good Morning America and Oprah. My entire career was built on looking at a process, finding the friction points, and fixing them so the talent could shine. When I co-founded Cogorno Golf and stepped into this world, I started meeting incredible people—successful executives, doctors, business owners—who were absolutely baffled by this game.
They would tell me, almost in a whisper, "Mary, I’ve been taking lessons for five years. I work hard. I practice. But I still stand on the first tee terrified that I don't know where the ball is going."
If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something important: It is not your fault.
You aren't lacking talent, and you certainly aren't lacking drive. The problem is that the traditional "one-hour-lesson" model is often set up to fight against how your brain actually learns.
Through my "producer's lens," I’ve observed why so many dedicated golfers still battle an inconsistent golf swing, and I’ve found that the solution isn't about trying harder, it’s about changing the environment where you learn.
The "Reset Button" Frustration (Why Frequency Matters)
We’ve all been there. You have a great lesson on Tuesday. You hit the ball pure. You leave the range feeling like you’ve finally cracked the code. But life gets in the way, and you don't touch a club until Saturday.
By the time you get to the course, that "feeling" is gone. You spend the front nine just trying to find it again.
In the media world, we call this "losing continuity." If you only rehearsed a play once a week, you’d never be ready for opening night. Yet, that is exactly what the traditional lesson model asks you to do. It forces you to hit the "reset button" every single time you see your coach.
A Better Way: We designed our Signature Golf Experiences (SGE) schools to break this cycle. Instead of spread-out lessons, we believe in Immersion. By spending two full days (16 hours) focused on your game, we remove the "reset." You build on the morning’s progress in the afternoon. You don't just learn the skill; you have the time to actually own it.
The "Band-Aid" vs. The Cure
We know you want to play better now. It is human nature to look for the "quick fix" that stops the slice today. But often, those quick fixes are just band-aids that mask the real issue.
This is one of the main reasons why golf lessons don’t work long-term. You fix the symptom, but the root cause remains. And when the pressure is on, the band-aid falls off.
A Better Way: Real improvement follows a curve. Sometimes, to build a swing you can trust for the next ten years, you have to be willing to be uncomfortable for two days. We created a safe environment at our schools where it’s okay to be messy. We guide you through that awkward "worse before better" phase with support and encouragement, ensuring you come out the other side with a swing that is actually yours.
Tired of Lessons That Don't Stick?
Our 2-day intensive golf schools solve the problems traditional lessons can't: concentrated repetition, clear practice plans, measurable goals, and 30 days of follow-up support.<
8 students. 5 coaches. Real accountability. Lasting results.
The "Translation" Gap (Closing the Feel vs. Real Loop)
Have you ever thought you were making a huge swing change, only to see it on video and realize it looked exactly the same?
That is the "Feel vs. Real" gap. It is incredibly frustrating, and it makes you feel like you're stuck in quicksand. As a producer, I learned early on that if the camera doesn't see it, it didn't happen.
A Better Way: We don't want you guessing. We want you knowing. At our schools, we use video analysis constantly—not to critique you, but to validate you. There is a powerful moment when a student sees their new swing on the iPad and realizes, "Wait, I actually did it." That is when the trust comes back. That is when the confidence returns.
Let’s Build a Game You Can Trust
I started Signature Golf Experiences because I saw too many golfers falling out of love with the game simply because they were frustrated by the process.
I want you to love your golf game again.
You don't need to struggle alone on the range, wondering if you're doing it right. You just need a team, a supportive environment, and the time to let the changes sink in.
We have a few spots open for our Spring 2026 sessions. These are small, intimate groups (just 8 players) because we want to make sure every single person gets the attention they deserve.
Upcoming Dates:
- March 12-13 (Boca Raton, FL)
- April 23-24 (Boca Raton, FL)
- May 7-8 (Boca Raton, FL)
If you are ready to stop "taking lessons" and start building a game that lasts, we would love to have you.
